SIP physicians Dr. Jonathan P. Perlman, of Perlman Center for Eye & Eyelid Surgery in Woodland, and, Dr. Robert Miller, of Advanced Valley Eye Associates in Davis, were honored in December as Heroes of The American Red Cross, Capital Region Chapter. They we were honored as Medical Professional Heroes for the work they’ve done over the past 10 years with medical missionary trips to Mexico. They’ve led approximately 25 trips and performed in excess of 1000 ophthalmic surgeries - mostly cataract surgeries.

SIP Senior Medical Director José A. Arévalo, M.D. was honored in June with the 2010 William Black Memorial Award from the Sacramento Chapter of the California Academy of Family Physicians. The award is given to one physician each year in recognition of his or her outstanding service to patients, community and colleagues.

Dr. Arévalo is a board-certified family physician with a long and prominent reputation as a teacher, researcher and administrator. A graduate of Stanford Medical School, he completed his residency and clinical research fellowship in family medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Arévalo has practiced medicine in numerous settings, including several community clinics and a multi-specialty medical group. He has also served on the faculty of the UC Davis Medical School for the last 20 years.

SIP Cardiologist George Fehrenbacher, M.D., was honored in 2010 as Physician of the Year at the Sutter Roseville Medical Center Foundation’s annual donor recognition event. The award acknowledges, in part, Fehrenbacher’s involvement in getting Sutter Roseville designated as a regional Heart Attack Center in March.

Dr. Fehrenbacher, a former chief of staff and co-medical director of cardiology at Sutter Roseville, was instrumental in Sutter Roseville becoming a Heart Attack Center, allowing emergency medical technicians to bypass other hospitals if a patient in South Placer and neighboring counties has a severe heart attack and needs emergency angioplasty or stenting. Patients are rushed to the hospital where they have the best chance of surviving and experiencing less damage to the heart. Dr. Fehrenbacher has practiced cardiology for 20 years.

Nancy Appelblatt, M.D., FACS, a SIP ENT with Sacramento Ear, Nose and Throat Medical and Surgical Group, Inc.,  was honored this year by the Sacramento Business Journal as one of the organization’s 2010 “Women Who Mean Business” – a distinction given to a small number of respected Sacramento business women each year to honor the excellent work they do for their organizations, and in the community.

A native of Flint, Mich. , Dr. Appelblatt entered the ENT program at the University of Michigan in 1978, when only 8 percent of residents entering the specialty nationwide were women. She was the second woman to finish the program at Michigan. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2008, the percentage of female ENT fellows was 27 percent.

A leader in the local medical community, Appelblatt has mentored family practice residents at Methodist Hospital for more than a decade and served as chief of otolaryngology at Mercy General Hospital since 2005. In 2009 she earned her board certification in pediatric and adult sleep medicine, and is currently up for fellowship in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. She is the only California physician north of San Francisco who is dual certified in both otolaryngology -- head and neck surgery -- and adult and pediatric sleep medicine.
